BOTOX® vs. Dysport®: What’s the Difference? By Stephen Dowell, DDS on January 20, 2022

A whopping 13% of cosmetic procedures in 2020 used botulinum toxin type A substances, like Dysport® and BOTOX® Cosmetic injections. With no surgery or recovery time, it’s no wonder why these cosmetic procedures are so popular.

At Dowell Dental Group, our Minerva, OH, team is committed to providing you with comprehensive dental care, including a range of cosmetic procedures. With cutting-edge technology in a spa-like atmosphere, you can feel confident that you’ll receive superior care with our dentist, Stephen C. Dowell.

If you’re considering appearance-enhancing injectables, you might be wondering what the difference is between BOTOX vs. Dysport. Here, our knowledgeable and experienced team tells you everything you need to know.

What Is BOTOX?

BOTOX is not considered a dermal filler. Instead, it is a neurotoxin that inhibits the muscles’ ability to contract.

By relaxing the muscles, fine lines and wrinkles do not have the opportunity to deepen. And when facial muscles aren’t contracting in their natural range of motion, it gives skin time to soften and relax. In turn, the effect that BOTOX has on facial muscles actively smooths and softens fine lines and wrinkles in the skin.

What Is Dysport?

Dysport contains the same neurotoxin as BOTOX. Therefore, Dysport injections are also used to induce relax the muscles to allow fine lines and wrinkles to dissipate.

BOTOX and Dysport both have practical applications outside of cosmetic procedures, including treating migraines, depression, and temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs). However, there are distinct characteristics that set them apart from each other.

BOTOX vs. Dysport: How Do I Know Which Is Right for Me?

When it comes to choosing the right prescription injectable for you, you’ll need to consider:

  • What condition you’d like to treat (e.g. fine lines, TMDs, etc.)
  • The area of your body that will be receiving treatment
  • How long you’d like to see noticeable results

Location

In general, Dysport and BOTOX are used on the forehead, between the brows, and around the eyes.

Results

Dysport tends to spread farther and work quicker with noticeable results in one to two days. In contrast, BOTOX does not spread as far and takes slightly longer to deliver noticeable results (between three and five days).

Duration

Patients who receive Dysport injections can expect to enjoy their treatment for three to four months. Patients with BOTOX injections may notice the effects of their treatment for about three months.

The Verdict

At Dowell Dental Group, we recommend BOTOX due to its versatility and long-lasting results. However, our dental team will assess your candidacy and discuss all available treatment options before beginning treatment.
